VAN HOUTRYVE Tomas contact photographer • NEPAL: Tense Transition
After a mass uprising in April 2006 brought an end to King Gyanendra's autocratic rule, Nepal was supposed to be headed towards peace and democracy.

Promised elections to alter the country's constitution have been canceled three times, and tense negotiations between Maoists and mainstream political parties have yet to reach consensus. While a number of symbolic steps to reduce the profile of the monarchy have been taken, so far the civilian government that replaced King Gyanendra has failed to agree on a new path for the nation. Meanwhile the population that was ravaged by more than a decade of civil war is loosing hope that progress lies ahead.
