FACES OF SANGATTE
In Sangatte, near Calais, 1,300 people are crowded in the Red Cross centre, opened in 1999 to welcome 700 refugees. In 2001, 95% are men and 80% come from Afghanistan. The rest are Kurds (15%) or Iranians and Africains (5%). To get here, they paid between 4,000 US dollars for a single passage to 12,000 US dollars for an entire family. And these asylum seekers will still have to pay smugglers up to 2,000 US dollars to reach their promised land, Britain. Each night, out of 200 attemps, 30 refugees make it to the other side of the Channel
