• A dog's life in Bucharest |
|
The streets of Romania's major cities, and particularly those of Bucharest, are not only crowded by their residents. For a few years now, some 250,000 stray dogs have invaded the country's capital. Many were abandoned by their owners, too poor to take care of them. For Bucharest's residents, the dogs are, like them, victims of communism. And so, the population feeds what it can to the animals, creating a bond with them through the misery humans and dogs both suffer from.
But some animals have become dangerous at night. It's at that time that they defend their "territory," organized by small packs, often starving and carrying diseases. The dogs are even a threat to the residents who feed them. In 2000, 22,000 people, mostly children and elderly people, were bitten by stray dogs.
